Rachel's 2012 Watch List - December

Please allow me a few minutes to whine. This was suppose to be a super happy post about how I kept up with all of my film watching and how I managed an average of at least one movie a day (which I did actually achieve). Alas, I've had a crappy week.

On Christmas evening, the ice started coming down...for hours...followed by 9-10 inches of snow. This is pretty unheard of in central Arkansas. We lost power just after 11:00 p.m. and as of 8:00 a.m. this morning (6 days later) it's still not back, because the rest of the city, and surrounding cities, lost it too. Being in the South, we're just simply not prepared for this type of problem.

Though we've had wonderful family (who didn't lose power) willing to take us in so we didn't freeze and starve to death, it's still a frustrating situation, especially being 7+ months pregnant with an (almost) 4-year-old. I was suppose to be off work today, but came in just to avoid going insane.

With most of the city being without electricity, the movie theaters haven't been a high priority to restore. So the few times I had a window to check out Django Unchained, Les Miserables or The Hobbit, there wasn't an available movie screen. This does not make me happy.

So this post isn't as celebratory as I had planned, but here's the last month of my film watching for 2012. What a shitty way to end what was otherwise a very good year.

12/1
Go (R) - Christmas...rave style.

12/2 - 12/8
Wreck-It Ralph (R) - Because it was so damn cute and only $5 to see it again on a Sunday morning.
Miracle on 34th Street - A decent first two-thirds. Falls off in the neverending courtroom scenes.
Arthur Christmas - Clever concept, but not a clever script.
The Dark Knight Rises (R) - I followed it better the second time. And I LOVE Bane.
Romeo + Juliet (R) - One of those lovely surprises when you forgot you bought the Blu-Ray months ago and find it on the shelf one night when deciding what to watch.

12/9 - 12/15
Gremlins (R) - Still waiting on Santa to deliver my Mogwai.
Gremlins 2: The New Batch (R) - Despite It's a Wonderful Life can be seen playing on a television in one scene, this is not a Christmas movie.
The Amazing Spider-Man - Great cast...too bad about the rest of the film.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - At least I got around to one of this year's Lincoln films.

12/16 - 12/22
American Reunion - Worse than that wedding one, despite everyone coming back for it.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (R) - "A talking monkey, yeah, yeah. Came here from the future. Ugly sucker. Only says 'ficus'."
John Carter - Hated it after 10 minutes. It only got worse after that.
Mirror Mirror - Only took me a week to get through it.
The Queen (R) - I don't think Michael Sheen gets enough love. Of course doing Twilight movies doesn't help, but still.
Die Hard (R) - Tis the season...

12/23 - 12/29
Love Actually (R) - Continuing our Christmas Eve Eve tradition.
Scrooged (R) - Now it's Christmas!
The LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring (R) - Now that we've watched the trilogy 2 years in a row...
The LOTR: The Two Towers (R) - can we consider this our Christmas Day tradition?
The LOTR: The Return of the King (R) - At least we got started early enough to finish before we lost power.
Killer Joe - So glad I don't eat fried chicken, otherwise it'd be ruined for me right about now.

12/30 - 12/31
NOTHING, BECAUSE MOTHER NATURE IS A FILTHY SELFISH WHORE!!!
Django Unchained - Of course I freaking loved it. And I will love it even more when I'm not 7+ months pregnant.

EDIT: Luck doubly shined upon us this evening as we got to catch a late matinee of Django Unchained after work AND our electricity was finally restored at home after six very dark days. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Rachel's Watch List - November

11/1 - 11/3
Groundhog Day (R) - Repeat viewings feel so meta.
Rushmore - I still don't get the love for Anderson.
Ocean's Eleven (R) - Because who could resist a Saturday night with these two?

11/4 - 11/10
Wreck-It Ralph - One of my favorite animated family films to come along in a while.
Get Low - I wanted to like it more.
Broken Flowers - My first Jarmusch. Not bad.
Synecdoche, New York - I need to see it a dozen more times to even begin to understand what was going on.
Safety Not Guaranteed - Oddly paced for such a short film.
Lost in Translation (R) - Yes, it keeps getting better.
Twilight (R) - You know...
New Moon (R) - because...like...
Eclipse (R) - a new one...
Breaking Dawn: Part 1 (R) - hit theaters. Or something.

11/11 - 11/17
Happiness - Misnomer.
The Savages - Only movie I've seen that comes close to my line of work.
Breaking Dawn: Part 2 - It's over...and stuff.

11/18 - 11/24
Pirate Radio (R) - Another one that got better with a rewatch.
Mary & Max - Wasn't sure what to expect. Still not sure what I watched, but I liked it.
The Ref (R) - Starting the Christmas movies before Turkey Day.
Capote (R) - Did not make me want to reread In Cold Blood this time.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - Like Hoffman and Hawke could really be brothers. Pffft. (Otherwise, really good film.)
Flawless - The movie is far from it, but what do you expect from the man who brought you Batman's nipples?
Mission: Impossible 3 (R) - A good action film, but nothing beats the first one for me.
Skyfall - A Bond I liked a lot.
Home Alone (R) - Yes, I use to crush on the Culkin...
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (R) - Even after seeing this awful sequel.
Life of Pi - This made me want to finish the book I started 6 years ago.

11/25 - 11/30
A Christmas Carol - There's a reason...
Black Christmas - I watched all these Christmas movies...
Reindeer Games  (R) - before December even got here.
A Christmas Story (R) - You'll see why in a few hours.

First Time - 236
Rewatched - 115
Total - 351

Rachel's 2012 Watch List - October

10/1 - 10/6
Chicago (R) - Still boasts one of my favorite roadtrip soundtracks.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - Dear Lord Baby Jesus, why do people let Will Farrell make movies?
The Cabin in the Woods (R) - Yep, again. Better than watching some dumbass political debate on t.v.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story - Not great, or but better than some of the other John C. Reilly comedies I encountered.
Looper - I know I really liked it, but I want to see it again so I can say I love it.
Step Brothers - Mary Steeburgen playing Will Farrell's mother makes sad for some reason.

10/7 -10/13
Terri - Comedy, Drama, Comedy, Drama? Who the hell knows?
Criminal - An odd twist to the heist film.
Cedar Rapids - More quirk than spoof. I liked it.
Sound of My Voice - A decent start to a movie, but where's the rest of the story?
Boogie Nights (R) - The only P.T. Anderson worth rewatching, IMHO.
The Avengers (R) - A girl needs her superhero/Whedon fix on a Saturday night.

10/14 - 10/20
Carnage - Adults behaving very badly, and I'm still not sure why.
Cyrus - I don't understand the Duplass love.
Catwoman - I think Halle was in on the joke, but I'm not sure anyone else was.
The Innkeepers - Slow build to...nothing.
Monster's Ball (R) - Except for that sex scene, it's still a pretty good film.

10/21 - 10/27
Arbitrage - Not bad for movie with a lot of financial jargon.
Their Eyes Were Watching God - Still not sure who all was watching God here.
Things We Lost in the Fire - I miss liking David Duchovny.
Hunger - Not of the Fassy variety; another one of Brad's awful B-horror flicks on Netflix. The soundtrack, not the gore, made me sick.
Gothika (R) - If you're a ghost who wants her murder solved, why would you try to kill the woman that you want to solve the murder?
Losing Isaiah - Oh, this movie made me so angry.
Boomerang - That was needlessly long.
Bulworth - Would've been better with Warren Beatty, especially without Warren Beatty rapping.
Perfect Stranger - The internet is the root of all evil and so is this film.
Argo - Much better date night movie than The Master.

10/28 - 10/31
Caddyshack - I really don't like Rodney Dangerfield.
Ruby Sparks - Deconstructing the issue with the manic pixie dreamgirl.
Stripes - The first hour was okay, but that's about it.
What About Bob? (R) - What about the laughs? There were none.

Rachel's 2012 Watch List - September

Where exactly did September go?

9/1
The Hunger Games (R) - You know, because it hit Blu-Ray and I bought it.

9/2 - 9/8
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - Hated the child actor too much for words. At least I finished watching this year's Best Picture nominees.
War Horse - I'm surprised I didn't hate it.
Mermaids (R) - So cheesy, but so much fun with Cher and Winona.
Beetle Juice (R) - Day-O!
Winter's Bone (R) - Because it only gets better with each viewing.
Edward Scissorhands (R) - Back when the team of Depp and Burton didn't nauseate audiences.

9/9 - 9/15
Bachelorette - How did such a decent cast go so wrong?
The Cabin in the Woods (R) - I couldn't wait for the Blu-Ray to hit, so I jumped the gun with a digital download.
The Age of Innocence (R) - Hey Daniel Day-Lewis not hamming it up.
Girl, Interrupted (R) - I wish I was skinny enough to pull off Winona's haircut here.
Little Women (R) - I guess I shouldn't always rely on my 14-year-old self's opinion of movies. Liked this so much better this time around.
A Scanner Darkly (R) - A good story buried under a world of weird.

9/16 - 9/22
Butter - Ever want to see The Last Supper or Kennedy's assassination sculpted in butter? Somethings you can't unsee.
Reality Bites (R) - And so does this movie.
Swordfish - Why Hugh? Why?
Wolverine (R) - Um, so this was definitely not what I remembered, but I was sleep-deprived when I first saw it, so I have an excuse.
Clueless (R) - Had a headache that Tylenol couldn't cure. This fixed it.
The House at the End of the Street - Oh, Ms. Lawrence, please do not make crap like this again.
The Master - I don't have any real desire to review this. It just left me emtionally dead inside.

9/23 - 9/29
Mean Girls (R) - Lindsay, I still don't know where you went wrong.
Real Steel - As silly as a film about boxing robots should be, this was a pretty nice little film.
Someone Like You - Could this have been a more generic rom-com?
Australia (R) - The one Luhrman film I can do without, if I had to choose.
X2 (R) - Angry Wolverine = Sexy Wolverine
Kate & Leopold - Rom-com time travel. It shouldn't have worked, but it did.
Van Helsing - Awful camp. And Hugh wasn't even hot.
Deception (R) - Three good leads, but a pitiful plot.
Beverly Hills Cop - Filling in some '80 comedic blindspots. Thank you Instant Watch.

9/30
Pitch Perfect - Sunday silly fun.
Coming to America - Not as funny as I'd hoped.

Rachel's 2012 Watch List - August

Oh, I'm sorry. Were you expecting a Sims Screenshot? Well, I'm taking this holiday weekend to engage my reset mode, and will be taking a day off from my little game. In its stead, I'm giving you my list of films I watched during the month of August. Not exactly a fair trade, but do come back next week to play again.

8/1 - 8/4
Men in Black II (R) - Turns out Lara Flynn Boyle really wasn't the worst thing about this movie.
Space Cowboys - I bet changing Depends in space would be a nightmare.
Under Siege (R) - Gary Busey in drag...that's all I can say.
Captain America: The First Avenger (R) - I liked it a tiny bit more than I did the first time.
Thief - I need to see more James Caan films.
Total Recall - Won't be a classic like the original, but it did the trick for a matinee. Screw the haters.
RocknRolla (R) - Now that Idris Elba and Tom Hardy are more known to me, this movie was even awesomer (it's a word).

8/5 - 8/11
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada - Watching two men ride through the desert with a decomposing corpse was no way to spend a Sunday morning.
Orlando (R) - Gender bending to the extreme!
Saved! (R) - I wish the once famous Culkin would get his shit together and do more films.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - How much shorter would these films be without all the slow motion shots? I'd say at least half an hour.
The Deep End (R) - Josh Lucas sports a pedo mustache...that is all.
Zombieland (R) - The only thing that could actually make me want a Twinkie.
Burn After Reading (R) - The only thing I miss about going to the gym is watching my Brad pretend to be Brad Pitt on the treadmill. And being skinny. I miss that too.

8/12 - 8/18
Beasts of the Southern Wild - Can't wait to see this one again.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & The Wardrobe (R) - I couldn't stop making unicorn jokes during the big battle.
Michael Clayton (R) - I don't normally dig legal dramas, but this one had me at hello.
I Am Love - Such a massive failure by Netflix in its description of the film.
Empire Records (R) - Did you know: IT'S REX MANNING DAY?!
Thumbsucker - Like Keanu could ever really be an orthodontist.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (R) - Yep...it's still long.
Julia - A film with a kid who gets kidnapped whilst already being kidnapped. A bit too redundant.

8/19 - 8/25
The Raid: Redemption - I have now seen an Indonesian film. Yay me.
Closer (R) - Seven years later and I still hate it.
The Faculty (R) - Probably haven't watched my dvd copy since I bought it, but it was on Netflix Instant, so I had to see it. Makes no sense.
Duplicity (R) - Still decent, but could've been better without Big Lips Roberts.
Premium Rush - Summer fun just as the season ends.

8/26 - 8/31
Piranha - I know I'm 2 years late, but that was campy awesomeness.
Inside Man (R) - The second time I've watched it this year. Crazy considering I never once watched my dvd copy the five years I had it before giving it away.
Sin City (R) - The only film that doesn't make me want to punch Jessica Alba.
Greenfingers - English prisoners make gardens. Based on a true story, of course.
Croupier - Who knew a film about a casino dealer could be somewhat interesting?
Gosford Park - Started out shaky, but found its stride and turned out to be pretty fantastic.
Bent - Did you ever want to see Mick Jagger in full-on drag? Yeah, me neither.
Trust (R) - The reason I'm moving my family to an Amish community when my daughter turns 12.
Children of Men (R) - Did that actually get even better? How is that possible?

2012 TALLY:

Rachel's 2012 Watch List - July

7/1 - 7/7
Moonrise Kingdom - I think I liked it.
Anatomy of a Murder - Too much courtroom shenanigans for my taste.
The Karate Kid (R) -  It's been so long, it was like watching it for the first time.
21 Jump Street - Laughed so hard, in spite of myself.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Hey, my first John Wayne movie. And it was awesome!
The Shape of Things (R) - A terrible film that actually brings up good discussion points.
Made for Each Other - One of Jimmy Stewart's earliest, but far from one of his best.
Easy A (R) - It never gets old.

7/8 - 7/14
Roman Holiday - They don't make 'em like this anymore.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy - To everyone who told me this was a "good" Will Ferrell movie: I hate you, you dirty liars!
Oldboy - Yes, that hallway scene is quite amazing.
Kick-Ass (R) - Outside a few great action sequences, this didn't hold up.
Sabrina - I kinda think Bogart wasn't the best choice for Linus, but it's still an admirable film.
Funny Face - Wow, that has to be one of the worst musicals ever made.
The Nun's Story - Watch it through Peter Finch's scenes, then just stop after that.
Batman Begins (R) - I heard there was another one coming out soon...

7/15 - 7/21
The Dark Knight (R) - So I thought I'd reacquaint myself with the first two, yet again.
Breakfast at Tiffany's (R) - Let's make an icon out of a call girl.
The Children's Hour - And I thought I hated the child actors today.
Charade - How can anyone not love Cary Grant?
Friends with Kids - Friends with Benefits with Kids or Friends with Kids with Benefits?
My Fair Lady (R) - Aside from the obnoxious misogyny, I love this movie.
Wait Until Dark - Alan Arkin now haunts my nightmares.
The Dark Knight Rises - Yep, he rose a couple times.
Robin and Marian - I never really cared what happened to Robin Hood once he hit his midlife crisis.

7/22 - 7/28
Battle Royale - Are Japanese middle schoolers really that resilient to bullets?
Coal Miner's Daughter - One of the least dramatic biopics I've seen.
Batman Forever (R) - I weep for my 14-year-old self who unironically loved this film.

7/29 - 7/31
The Fugitive (R) - It wasn't me; it was the one-armed man.
Silent House - Review tomorrow. Hint: It's not going to be favorable.
Dog Day Afternoon - First film for an upcoming DemPod.

6/1 - 6/2
Men In Black III - So meh, my date fell asleep.
Snow White and the Huntsman - A very pretty film with a lot of problems.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (R) - "I'm in lesbians with you."

6/3 - 6/9
Harvey - OMG, did I only watch one movie all week?! At least I'm caught up on True Blood and Breaking Bad.

6/10 - 6/16
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted - The only thing I really took away from this was the "Afro Circus" diddy, which makes wants to claw out my eardrums.
We Need to Talk About Kevin - A true horror film for any parent.
The Evil Dead - At first I was having The Cabin in the Woods flashbacks.
Birdemic: Shock and Terror - Move over Troll 2; there's a new Best Worst Movie in town.
RoboCop - Catching up on my 80's classics.
Little Shop of Horrors - It's been 20 years since I've seen this and I'm beginning to realize where my crippling fear of dentists comes from.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - Takes me back to middle school civics class.
Prometheus - Well that was frustrating, and not in a good way.
The Cabin in the Woods (R) - The second-run theater must have known it was my birthday and afforded me the opportunity to see my favorite 2012 film (so far) for only a buck.

6/17 - 6/23
Chronicle - I'm so over found footage films.
Jane Eyre - Not a classic Brit Lit love story I could get into.
Angel - SPOILER: I still can't believe this movie wasn't all in the protagonist's head.
Hunger - It gets the Into the Wild Award from me.
Centurion - Fassy vs. Psycho Warrior Woman was excellent entertainment.
Fish Tank - Outside of a questionable turn near the end, I really dug it.
Inglourious Basterds (R) - Fassy may have only had two scenes, but I'll take any opportunity to watch one of my favorite QT films again.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - The more I think about it, the more I like it.
Inception (R) - I've been missing 2010 a lot lately.

6/24 - 6/30
The Shop Around the Corner - Total ripoff of You've Got Mail. [/sarcasm]

The Hunt for Red October - Wait, Sean Connery was a protagonist? How?
Brave - Expect a Movies with Mia on the horizon.

Rachel's 2012 Watch List - May

May was much slower than April, mainly due to stars' careers for the podcast, since I'd seen most of Smith's and Theron's films and with the anniversary episode on the horizon, there was no need to cram anything into the last week. And now I'm addicted to Breaking Bad, along with catching up on the last seasons of Weeds and True Blood. Alas, I'm happy that I'm still ahead of my one-movie-per-day-average goal, but I should be jump starting this new month with two new releases in as many days.

5/1 - 5/5
The Legend of Bagger Vance - Practically 90 minutes of a film dedicated to a game of golf? What fresh new hell is this?
Seven Pounds - That's how many pounds of margarita I had to imbibe to make it through some of Will Smith's lesser films.
Ali - Not as interesting as I had hoped it'd be.
The Avengers - Aside from waiting so damn long to bring in Thor, it was pretty awesome.

5/6 - 5/12
Haywire - Count me as one of the few who didn't really care.
Enemy of the State - A little too bloated with mid-90s technology, but love the random male cast.
Bad Boys (R) - Téa Leoni may just be the most annoying woman on the planet.
Six Degrees of Separation - That was...odd.
Bad Boys II - There are no decent words to describe this messy sequel to a film that wasn't very good in the first place.
Network - One of the most prophetic films I've seen lately.

5/13 - 5/19
Mother's Day - Not to be shown to any mother on actual Mother's Day...or ever.
The Yards - This film should've been better with a good to great cast, but it wasn't.
The Devil's Advocate - The most satanic thing about Pacino is his overacting.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - Step 1. Declare there is a mole in the British Intelligence. Step 2. ? Step 3. Reveal mole in the British Intelligence.
The Grey - What a terrible promotional ad for the Alaskan wilderness.

5/20 - 5/26
Trapped - Will Kevin Bacon ever stop being a creeper?
Reality Bites - In what cruel world are a yuppie Ben Stiller and a stoner Ethan Hawke the only two choices a girl has?
St. Elmo's Fire - I say it's not the Brat Pack without Molly Ringwald; Demi Moore is just a poser.
The Burning Plain - Just one more reason to love Jennifer Lawrence.

5/27 - 5/31
Black Swan (R) - First time I've watched it since the theater. I no longer feel shame.
The Hunger Games (R) - Just one more time before it leaves my theater. Not like there was much else playing.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - I'm not the target demographic, but I still liked it.
The Avengers (R) - I still say Captain America is a drag. Thankfully everyone else is on top of their game.
Vertigo - So that's what the big deal is; can't argue with that.

Rachel's 2012 Watch List - April

I'm carrying this over from my old site. If you're not familiar, it's pretty self-explanatory. This was an extremely busy month, mainly thanks to the fact that I did a week's worth of catching up with the wrong actor for the podcast and had to cram in a lot in 5 days to be show-ready. I also got around to some late 2011 releases that finally hit dvd. It was a good month.

4/1-4/7
Beauty & the Beast (R) - Mia's first time at the movie theater. Read all about it here.
Unstoppable - SPOILER: They stop the train.
Glory (R)- Brought back memories of my 8th grade American History class, which is the first place I watched it.
American Gangster - If I had to choose, I'd give Denzel the Oscar for this over Training Day.
Philadelphia (R) - Speaking of Oscars, how did Hanks win for this, but Denzel wasn't even nominated?

4/8-4/14
The Hurricane - Somehow managed to feel longer than Malcolm X, though it's an hour shorter.
Devil in a Blue Dress (R) - Not bad for neo-noir. Glad I revisited it.
Fallen - Outside of the continuous "touching" scenes, this was a waste.
Malcolm X - What a marathon.
Inside Man (R) - So glad I rewatched it; forgot how funny Denzel was.
He Got Game - I still say Ray Allen was a bad actor.
Mo' Better Blues - Not Spike's best, but not bad either.
Man on Fire (R) - Step away from the Tony Scott films, Denzel...
Isolation - A reommendation from the Franklies. Freaky stuff!
The Muppets - Chris Cooper rapping: still can't get over that one.

4/15-4/21
Breaking Dawn: Part I (R)- With Rifftrax! Finally!
Monster - In which Charlize Theron channels Mickey Rouke.
Æon Flux - Titles with freaky characters automatically piss me off. It was all downhill from there.
2 Days in the Valley - 2 Hours in Hell
Sweet November - What's not so sweet: Keanu's acting.
Shame - A very unsexy look at sex addiction.
In the Valley of Elah - So sad on several levels.
Men of Honor - De Niro and Southern accents never really mix.
Jurassic Park (R) - Thought about taking Mia to see Chimpanzee; stayed at home and watched this instead. They're the same, right?
Little Miss Sunshine (R) - No better way to end a shit week.

4/22-4/28
The Cabin in the Woods - So the rumors were true: it is an amazing film!
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol - If it weren't an MI film, I might have liked it more.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona - When Javiar Bardem isn't playing Anton Chigurh, he's pretty damn sexy.
We Bought a Zoo - What happened Elle Fanning? You were so charming in Super 8 only 6 months prior.
A Good Woman - Helen Hunt should not act...ever again. Otherwise, this was at least a good story.
The Nanny Diaries - Chris Evans is so cute. Too bad his movies are rarely worth watching.
The Black Dahlia (R) - Outside of Fiona Shaw's insane over-the-top performance, this is still a mess of a film, made even worse by Hilary Swank, who looks nothing like Mia Kirshner.
In Good Company - Dear Topher Grace, I miss you.
Iron Man 2 (R) - I love Jess' observation comparing Sam Rockwell's performance to that of a younger Gary Oldman. Check out the next RI episode for details.
A Dangerous Method - Wake me when something interesting happens...
Scoop - The film that makes Hugh Jackman look like a creepy pedophile as he woos a much younger ScarJo.
Match Point - Had no clue what this was really about. All the posters made it look like a bland romance film. Was blown away. Well played, Mr. Allen.
The Man Who Wasn't There (R) - Would entertain the idea of this in a double feature with A Serious Man.
Lost in Translation - I'm not so lost on this anymore, since I've seen the entire film now.
The Prestige (R) - Love it more with each viewing.
A Love Song for Bobby Long - I feel safe in saying Travolta has little left to offer.
Troll 2 - It's not really about trolls...

4/29-4/30
The Pirates! Band of Misfits - Tried taking Mia to the theater again. More on this in a few days.
Best Worst Movie - This documentary behind Troll 2 left me really sad.
I, Robot (R) - Not a horrible movie, but some wasted potential.
Hancock (R) - See above.
