Rachel's 2012 Watch List - August

Oh, I'm sorry. Were you expecting a Sims Screenshot? Well, I'm taking this holiday weekend to engage my reset mode, and will be taking a day off from my little game. In its stead, I'm giving you my list of films I watched during the month of August. Not exactly a fair trade, but do come back next week to play again.

8/1 - 8/4
Men in Black II (R) - Turns out Lara Flynn Boyle really wasn't the worst thing about this movie.
Space Cowboys - I bet changing Depends in space would be a nightmare.
Under Siege (R) - Gary Busey in drag...that's all I can say.
Captain America: The First Avenger (R) - I liked it a tiny bit more than I did the first time.
Thief - I need to see more James Caan films.
Total Recall - Won't be a classic like the original, but it did the trick for a matinee. Screw the haters.
RocknRolla (R) - Now that Idris Elba and Tom Hardy are more known to me, this movie was even awesomer (it's a word).

8/5 - 8/11
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada - Watching two men ride through the desert with a decomposing corpse was no way to spend a Sunday morning.
Orlando (R) - Gender bending to the extreme!
Saved! (R) - I wish the once famous Culkin would get his shit together and do more films.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - How much shorter would these films be without all the slow motion shots? I'd say at least half an hour.
The Deep End (R) - Josh Lucas sports a pedo mustache...that is all.
Zombieland (R) - The only thing that could actually make me want a Twinkie.
Burn After Reading (R) - The only thing I miss about going to the gym is watching my Brad pretend to be Brad Pitt on the treadmill. And being skinny. I miss that too.

8/12 - 8/18
Beasts of the Southern Wild - Can't wait to see this one again.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & The Wardrobe (R) - I couldn't stop making unicorn jokes during the big battle.
Michael Clayton (R) - I don't normally dig legal dramas, but this one had me at hello.
I Am Love - Such a massive failure by Netflix in its description of the film.
Empire Records (R) - Did you know: IT'S REX MANNING DAY?!
Thumbsucker - Like Keanu could ever really be an orthodontist.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (R) - Yep...it's still long.
Julia - A film with a kid who gets kidnapped whilst already being kidnapped. A bit too redundant.

8/19 - 8/25
The Raid: Redemption - I have now seen an Indonesian film. Yay me.
Closer (R) - Seven years later and I still hate it.
The Faculty (R) - Probably haven't watched my dvd copy since I bought it, but it was on Netflix Instant, so I had to see it. Makes no sense.
Duplicity (R) - Still decent, but could've been better without Big Lips Roberts.
Premium Rush - Summer fun just as the season ends.

8/26 - 8/31
Piranha - I know I'm 2 years late, but that was campy awesomeness.
Inside Man (R) - The second time I've watched it this year. Crazy considering I never once watched my dvd copy the five years I had it before giving it away.
Sin City (R) - The only film that doesn't make me want to punch Jessica Alba.
Greenfingers - English prisoners make gardens. Based on a true story, of course.
Croupier - Who knew a film about a casino dealer could be somewhat interesting?
Gosford Park - Started out shaky, but found its stride and turned out to be pretty fantastic.
Bent - Did you ever want to see Mick Jagger in full-on drag? Yeah, me neither.
Trust (R) - The reason I'm moving my family to an Amish community when my daughter turns 12.
Children of Men (R) - Did that actually get even better? How is that possible?

2012 TALLY:
First Time - 182
Rewatched - 76
Total - 258

  1. We'll have watched (and/or rewatched) a handful of the same movies this month... again.

And ugh... I hated hated hated hated hated hated Gosford Park. I didn't much like it, either.

  2. I've seen more this year than you, but you have me beat on first-timers...so I think that makes us even.

I keep meaning to get back to GOSFORD PARK, especially after watching an essential that so clearly influenced it, THE RULES OF THE GAME.

The three best films I saw for the first time this month:

    ONE, TWO, THREE
    BREATHLESS
    HIGH AND LOW

    1. I think this is the first month I've had more repeat viewings than first timers, which almost makes me more proud, because the last couple of years have been tough on my neglected dvd collection.
