New Releases: 4/27/12

The Raven
So it's like Castle meets Sherlock, but without Nathan Fillion or Robert Downey, Jr.? Hmmm...no thanks. I really wish Cusack would do something worth watching again.

The Five-Year Engagement
Perhaps slapping "From the Producers of Bridesmaids" all over your movie might entice some people, but not I. And why would it? It's not like anyone cares who produced the film, most of the time. Anyway, this can only end with them getting married or calling it off, after 90 minutes of site gags and dirty jokes, and I'm not particularly intrigued enough to find out which one it will be. Feel free to spoil it for me.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits
I'm so torn on this. I've been wanting to take Mia to another movie, but there haven't been any options the last couple of weeks. This actually has an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes right now and it's got a decent voice cast, so all that's promising. But man did the trailer make it look stupid. I'll be faced with taking her to films that do not interest me for many years, but I don't think I should start before she's really aware. Perhaps I can coax her into Chimpanzee.

Safe
And our generic action flick of the week is brought to us by the always dependable (for generic action flicks) Jason Statham.

  1. S-o-o-o-o-o.... A good week to crash on the couch and watch something from home then?

This weekend I'm most looking forward to a doc (go figure!) about bands like Mumford & Sons doing a rock tour by railroad between San Francisco and New Orleans.

    1. Sounds about right. Besides after the hardcore cramming for ScarJo these past five days, I might not want to watch another movie all weekend. They're all starting to bleed together.

  2. I'm personally down for Pirates because I've never found an Aardman film that let me down.

    1. Looking down the list I haven't seen an Aardman film, though I know some have been highly praised. You'll have to let me know how this one turns out.

  3. At least this is "higher quality stuff that we're willing to ignore" as opposed to the garbage that comes out in January/February, right? I have at least a passing interest in 3/4 of these, despite my unwillingness to pay for them. That's saying something, I think.

    1. I guess no one decided to bother releasing anything big with The Avengers coming out this weekend. Still, a one weekend cash grab should be better than nothing. I did end up buckling for The Pirates, which wasn't as painfully stupid as I thought it could be at least.
