New Releases: 7/6/12

The Amazing Spider-Man
I've been against this from day one, and I'm sticking to my guns. I love Emma Stone and like Andrew Garfield. I'm not some die hard purist of the first franchise. I own the first two films, but couldn't tell you the last time I watched either of them. And I absolutely hated the third one. And I'm not against franchise reboots either, as a zombie outbreak couldn't keep me from The Dark Knight Rises. But come one: 10 YEARS! That's just not enough time folks. I feel like I have to stand on principle that Hollywood shouldn't be able to reboot something as big as Spider-Man this soon. I'll rent it someday, but I'm not paying for a ticket when I feel like I just saw the first one in the theater, a night which I distinctly remember from a mere decade ago.

Savages
This is just another Oliver Stone film that doesn't interest me at all. Drug dealers. Pretty girl. Mexican cartel. I feel like I've seen it all before. I'll just wait for Season 5 of Breaking Bad, thanks.

Katy Perry: Part of Me
I do not get these docs on the pop flavor of the month. Well, not true. I know it's just a cash grab to exploit the tweens of the world and their obsession over shitty pop music. Seriously though, these careers aren't long enough to matter and in 20 years, they won't.

  1. Rough release week huh? With you on Spidey though... thinking of boycotting it by seeing LOL in at the cinema instead.

    1. LOL? Is that the Miley Cyrus movie? If so, I'd just boycott cinema in general and stay home...or go bowling :)

  2. Rachel, you shot a giant hole in your Spider-Man argument by citing Batman. I'm also not a fan that they rebooted it so fast, but you can't complain about that in the same breath that you mention Dark Knight. Batman and Robin was 1997. Batman Begins was 2005. 8 years between franchises. So 8 is okay and 5 is not?

    1. For Batman, it was 8 years since the LAST installment of the previous franchise before the reboot, and 16 years since the first Batman film.

For Spider-Man, it's been only 5 years since the last installment, and only 10 years since the first Spider-Man film, so I stand by my original statement that it's too soon.

  3. Spider-Man was excellent! Infinitely better than Raimi's (and I dig Raimi's). But it's a much different film that the first one. Different tone, different style, altered story, etc.

    1. I've got to agree with Nick and David. I really like what Raimi did with the first 2 films, but Amazing Spider-Man just seemed so much better; and not because of the advancement of special effects. Garfield and Stone are incredible, and the acting as a whole was far superior to any in the original(s).

    2. I'll see it eventually on dvd, but I'm standing on principle that Hollywood will not get my movie ticket money just because they attempted to polish up a franchise that's barely been on the shelf long enough to tarnish.

Besides, for every positive comment, I hear just as many negative ones, so I'm not convinced I'm really missing out.
