New Releases: 5/4/12

The Avengers - Probably the best sign that this the only big movie opening this weekend is that the only other film opening in wide release is about 20-50 years different in the focus demographic as The Avengers.  I cannot wait to see this, and the fact that early reviews coming in are terrific means I'll be seeing it as soon as I can (why DID the rest of the world get this first?  I'm confused).  I've seen the stars making the rounds on the TV talk shows and even they're surprised by how good the movie is.  I'll definitely see it as I have loved the others (except maybe Iron Man 2).  I just bought Thor, so that's due for a rewatch too.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - A group of British retirees comes together to a hotel in India run by Dev Patel.   A terrific cast - Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, and Bill Nighy will probably make this a pretty good offering until Downton Abbey returns, but hardly a double billing with The Avengers, unless you're me.  However, it's not opening anywhere nearby, so I take issue with this as a "wide release".

There are no more than SEVEN limited releases also opening this weekend, none of which I've heard of, but all sound vaguely interesting or amazingly horrifying:
LOL - Starring Miley Cyrus.  This is only going to encourage my mom to say LOL rather than actually laughing.

First Position and Last Call at the Oasis are both documentaries, the first about dancing, and the second starring Erin Brockovich about the water crisis.

Mother's Day is a timely horror movie of some sort, starring Rebecca de Morney.

Meeting Evil stars Luke Wilson and and Sam Jackson, so might really stink since it's not being wide released.

Kate Hudson and Kathleen Turner are also releasing movies in limited release, but both look so painful I won't even list their titles.

  1. I can't wait to hear you and Jess talk about Marigold Hotel in two years for your Judi Dench episode. Old British actors are like Spanish fly to you two, apparently. :P

    1. But who doesn't love old British actors?

    1. Sorry, Jess! So used to this post being a Rachel staple that I didn't even check.

    2. We do alternate most things most weeks. Rachel covered the whole first week while I wrapped up IIE. But yes, it's a feature from her site.

  3. This must be "release things that came out a while ago in NZ" weekend. We got The Avengers a week and a half ago (it was AWESOME!). The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel came out over a month ago. Mother's Day came out on DVD at the beginning of the year.

Then again, we just got The Grey in cinemas this week :/

    1. Can't say I haven't been insanely jealous of all the Avengers reactions coming out of NZ and Australia this past week. It'll finally be my turn tomorrow!

  4. I can highly recommend The Best Marigold Exotic Hotel, whilst the film has come in for some criticism as some people think it represents old fashion english colonialism, I think this is unfounded. The story is really quite touching and the fact that it is in India is really quite incidental, the issues they deal with could take place anywhere. There are some fantastic performances from a real stellar British cast, Tom Wilkinson in particular is the real stand out. As British chap, who lived for 3 years in India before relocating to Australia, it made me homesick for both. Enjoy!
