Battleship
This movie is hopefully the tipping point for whether or not the studios will continue making movies based on insane origin material.  Yes, Pirates worked.  But I don't see a Captain Jack in Battleship.  And if they don't utter the commercial line from my childhood "You sunk my battleship" I'll be so shocked.  However, this movie has been making decent money overseas, so perhaps it's not as ridiculous as it might be.  Sadly, "Friday Night Lights" star Taylor Kitsch hasn't had the greatest spring so far (*cough John Carter), but reteaming with his FNL creator, director Peter Berg, might be a good thing.  On the fence.

What to Expect When You're Expecting
I have no idea what this could possibly be about, unless there are lots of pregnant women and a fair amount of uncomfortable men making faces when they hear they won't be able to have sex with their wives for 6 weeks after the baby is born.  But the cast isn't bad - Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Jennifer Lopez.  But that doesn't mean the movie's good.  But yes, I'll definitely see it.

The Dictator
I'll admit, I don't understand Sasha Baron Cohen.  I get that he's really popular and has created some really iconic characters.  Borat was a funny, if horribly offensive, movie.  I haven't seen Bruno.  I saw SBC appear on "The Daily Show" as The Dictator and the conversation was impressively funny, though uncomfortable too.  I will not pay money to see this, but perhaps on TV someday.

  1. We asked Tom (I believe it was) a while back. They don't say the line in Battleship, unfortunately.

  3. LOL - you included J-Lo as evidence that the cast wasn't bad. You're losing me, Jess. ;)

No desire to see the first two from me, but I'll probably give The Dictator a shot. Offensiveness is Cohen's leading seller; you really should watch his old Da Ali G Show episodes. Ali G was a tremendous character, perhaps even better than Borat, though Borat was incredible on the show as well. Bruno was ok for a change of pace every now and then but I never thought him all that funny, and that movie unfortunately was just pretty bad (in addition to being more offensive than Borat).

  4. Dylan - you ought to know I was joking about that cast by including J. Lo. I should have listed the male cast. Then you'd have known for sure.

    1. No, completely missed that. Does that mean you don't care for Diaz (wouldn't surprise me) or Banks (would surprise me), either?

    2. I like some of both Diaz and Banks' movies but no, I wouldn't assume they're bringing a good movie.

  5. Another person who was on the fence about Battleship because of FNL alums involvement. I knew there was I reason I follow you around the blogosphere, Jess.

  6. I'll check out "The Dictator" but don't want to spend full price to see it. I generally like Sacha Baron Cohen's writing

  7. I've never really had a desire to see any SCB flick (and haven't), but I'd definitely see The Dictator before the other two.
