The Lunchtime Poll #1

Welcome to the bi-weekly Lunchtime Poll. Since launching the blog, we've been blessed with filling alternate Sundays (non-podcast days) with Andy's blogathon and The Kid's interview. But we decided we needed something more permanent to fall back on, so we're keeping it simple with a poll. However, the poll will tie in to the Random Segment on the show.

This week Heather and Veronica want to know:

What is your favorite time of day to go to the movies?

Vote in the poll to the right and listen to Episode 80 for our preferences.

  1. I'm an Early Matinee person, like to slip in when there are some people, but high-school kids and younger are still in school. Usually just respectable adults and retired couples. The best movie crowd as far as I'm concerned.

Also, I usually go see movies on weekdays, often Friday. Unless I plan to meet someone at the theater, I almost never go on the weekend. Brings out the kind of crowd I dislike to be around at the movies.

    1. I like going on weekday matinees too, as long as it's during the school year, but I only get to do it maybe three times a year. But weekend mornings (outside of kids films) are generally the same kinds of crowds, so those are my favorites when I can't make a weekday.

  2. For me it is mid-week early evening screenings. Just enough of a crowd to give am atmosphere and normally a pretty respectful bunch as well. Later screenings, especially at weekends seem to be full of people with no or little respect for basic cinema etiquette. Don't even get me started on nachos eaters.....

    1. Yeah, nachos should be banned from the theater. Of course this is from the same person who tried to open a noisy plastic bag of gummy candy during The Tree of Life. I decided it was in my best interest to let it go.

I can't remember the last time I went to movie in the early evening on a weekday. But working 8-5 then going home and doing the dinner thing prevents that, even before having kids.

  3. This has changed for me since I became a parent. It used to be nighttime, but I've grown really fond of morning showings on weekends, or early matinees. I do sometimes go at late night (9-10 pm) when our daughter's asleep, but it's hard to beat an early showing. Plus, it's cheaper!

    1. Dan, I think you and I see eye to eye on this one. We'll catch a night show if our daughter is with her grandparents, but otherwise, it's early morning (if I'm by myself or with my mom) or early matinee if we're together. It just makes things easier.

  4. I like to go to the Saturday morning matinee, because the AMCs here have $6 tickets before noon on weekends (which is basically half price). But sometimes sleeping in takes precedence, and we go early afternoon on Saturday instead. We rarely if ever go during the week unless it's a one-off screening. Too tired after work to bother with it.

    1. My theater is the same. I love those "pre-matinee" prices, so I usually sleep in on Saturdays and go on Sunday morning. If I get up for an early show on a Saturday, it's for a movie originally geared at teens (Twilight, The Hunger Games). Then my mom and I go first thing on Saturday (as early as 8:30 sometimes) to avoid the teen crowd.

Evening screenings during the work week are reserved for things like Valentine's Day and our anniversary, and rarely do we even take advantage then because it just throws everyone's schedule off.

  5. Ideally, it'd be weekday matinees, since I'm a fan of as few people in the theater as possible, plus it's cool to walk out of the theater and have it still be bright out. But since that's not really feasible, I answered "night" since that's the time we go 80% of the time.

Oh, and having just watched Heathers again for the MOTM ep, I love the theme here.

    1. Leaving the theater with daylight left is one of the points discussed on the show. I like leaving the theater and still having the rest of the day to do stuff, one of the reasons mornings are my favorite. Otherwise, I feel like I'm planning everything around going to the theater.

    2. Oh, and glad you like the theme. I couldn't resist. I listened to the MOTM episode right after posting this too and just laughed at the synergy.
